If your air conditioner has started acting up, then ignoring the problem won’t make it go away. What it will do is:

  1. Increase your electricity bill
  2. Shorten the life expectancy of the AC unit
  3. Increase the cost of repairs you ultimately have to pay for
  4. Increase the likelihood of an AC breakdown during a hot day

You don’t want any of those things, which is why you need to know when it’s time to request professional AC repair. Let’s review some of the most common signs that you need an HVAC pro!

High Electricity Bills

If your electricity bills spike this summer – beyond what inflation and rising energy prices can reasonably account for – then your AC is the likeliest culprit. When one AC component wears out, it can reduce the efficiency of every other interconnected part. Dirty coils and filters are both common causes of increased energy usage. Fortunately, those are both routine repairs for an HVAC pro.

Noisy Operation

No AC unit is perfectly silent during operation, but several noises indicate serious problems. Banging noises could indicate a compressor issue. Screeching could mean that the fan motor is malfunctioning. An electric humming noise may signal the contactor relay switch is defective. Buzzing, rattling, clicking, bubbling and hissing all coincide with serious mechanical issues as well.

Uneven Cooling

It’s not uncommon to notice that some parts of a home’s interior are hotter or cooler than others. This problem isn’t necessarily the result of AC issues; poor insulation or broken ductwork could prove to be the underlying issue as well. But if you only notice uneven indoor temperatures during the summer, then you’d do well to begin solving the problem by focusing on the AC unit itself.

Leaking

Is your AC leaking water? This could be due to a number of reasons, such as a clogged condensate line or damaged condensate pump or drain pan. But one thing is for sure: if your AC isn’t effectively draining water, it’s at higher risk of becoming damaged by corrosion or mold and algae growth. Leaking water usually calls for a straightforward repair, but it’s not one that you should postpone.

If your AC is leaking refrigerant, then you have a far more serious issue on your hands. The unit cannot carry out the heat exchange cycle without an adequate supply of Freon or Puron. If the unit continues to operate without refrigerant, it will eventually fail altogether. Refrigerant leaks may stem from a defective or incorrectly installed unit, as well as connections that have gradually become eroded by prolonged exposure to the elements. No matter the underlying cause, professional repair is the only way to resolve a refrigerant leak!

Frozen Coils

An AC unit contains two types of coils: the evaporator coil, which absorbs heat and humidity from inside the house, and the condenser coil which releases that heat and humidity to the outside air. Either of these coils can freeze as a result of becoming excessively dirty, which is a simple enough problem to fix. But a much more serious refrigerant leak can also cause these sensitive components to become encased in ice, in which case immediate professional repair is very much warranted.

Failure to Start

Is your AC operating inefficiently, inexplicably shutting down in the middle of operation, or failing to start up altogether? Multiple underlying issues could be at play, including a dead or pitted capacitor (essentially a battery that acts as the AC’s starter motor). If your unit is producing a burning plastic smell or emitting a low humming noise during operation, then its capacitor is likely in need of immediate replacement.
